International homes compared through their floor plans: what climate writes into a plan, corridor against courtyard, and the marks that law leaves.
This site does not publish the location of anybody's home, and there is no map here that will tell you where someone lives. The map worth having is a different one: a floor plan. Lay plans of large houses from different parts of the world side by side and you are looking at a map of climate, fuel, law and custom, drawn by people solving the same problem under different constraints.

Climate is the first thing written into a plan
Where winters are long and fuel was expensive, plans are compact. Rooms cluster around a heat source, ceilings stay low enough to keep warm air where people are, windows are modest and set deep in thick walls, and the entrance gets a lobby so the cold does not come straight into a room. A compact shape has less surface for its volume, which is the whole point: it loses less heat.
Where the problem is summer heat rather than winter cold, the logic inverts. Plans open out and thin down so air can pass through. Ceilings rise so the hot air has somewhere to go above head height. Openings appear on opposite walls to allow cross ventilation. Shade becomes structural: deep overhangs, loggias, shutters, screens and thick walls that stay cool through the afternoon. A house designed for heat is often one room deep in places, which looks wasteful until you realize that depth is what kills ventilation.
Where rain is relentless, roofs steepen and overhang further, and the ground floor lifts clear of splashback and damp. Where snow is heavy, roof pitch and structure are sized for the load, and the entrance gets a porch that will not be buried.
None of this is decoration. It is the reason a plan from one region looks wrong when it is built in another, and why imported house types so often need mechanical systems to correct problems the local type never had.
Two ways of moving through a house
The great division in domestic plans is how you get from one room to the next.
In the room-to-room house, rooms open directly into each other, sometimes in a chain along one side of the building. It is efficient with space and hopeless for privacy: to reach the last room you walk through everything in between. Grand versions of this made a virtue of the arrangement, with doorways aligned so that a long view ran through the whole building.
In the corridor house, a passage takes the traffic and every room opens off it. You lose floor area to circulation and gain the ability to shut a door and be genuinely alone. Once corridors existed, it also became possible to give staff their own route, which changed how large houses worked far more than any change of style.
In the courtyard house, circulation happens outside. Rooms open onto a court or a covered walk around it, and the court supplies light, air, shade and a private outdoor room that the street cannot see into. It is a superb answer in a hot dry climate and on a tight urban lot, and it is why so many older cities look blank from the street and open inward.
Most large houses are hybrids. Reading which system dominates tells you what the builders were most worried about: space, privacy, or heat.
What law leaves on the plan
Building rules and heritage designations show up as shapes. Height limits produce a top floor squeezed into the roof. Setback rules produce a house pushed to one edge of its lot. Rules about window openings near a boundary produce blank walls facing a neighbor. Where an old street pattern survives, lot shapes are irregular and the plan bends to fit them.
Heritage protection shows up differently, usually as things that did not happen. Original window proportions survive where replacement was restricted. Service wings survive where demolition was refused. Extensions appear at the back rather than the front, and often in a visibly different material, because that is what consent allowed. If you see a house whose front is untouched and whose rear is a patchwork of periods, you are usually looking at the effect of a designation rather than a preference.
Comparative plans are widely published by public archives. The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Online Catalog is one place where measured drawings sit alongside photographs, which is the combination that makes this kind of reading possible. Local and national heritage bodies publish their own registers, and those are the right places to check whether a specific building is protected and what the protection covers. How to use this practically
Take any plan of a large house and mark three things: where the heat came from, where the daylight comes from, and how a person crosses the building. Then ask what would break if you moved the house to a different climate. That exercise does more for understanding a house than any amount of stylistic labeling, and it works equally well on a historic plan and a new one.

Common questions
Why will you not publish where notable houses are?
Because publishing the location of a private home, or enough detail to work it out, exposes the people living there to real risk. Buildings that are open to the public as museums are a different matter, and they publish their own addresses and visiting arrangements.
Is there a map that is actually useful for architecture?
Yes: conservation area and heritage register maps published by public bodies, and the maps of buildings genuinely open to visitors. Those are built from public information about institutions rather than about individuals. The distinction is worked through in privacy-safe celebrity maps.
Can you tell where a house is from its plan alone?
You can often narrow the climate and the building tradition, which is a region and not a place. That is the useful resolution, and it is also the safe one.
Does modern construction erase these differences?
It softens them. Mechanical heating and cooling let a plan ignore its climate, which is why houses in very different places now sometimes look alike.
