Who owns a large house matters less than what happens when the household that built it for its own life is no longer the household living in it. The type has a long history of second and third careers. How a big building is adapted tells you more about it than any account of its first occupants.

Why the type is hard to reuse
A large house is expensive to keep in a way that has nothing to do with any one household's circumstances. The building has more envelope per usable room than a small one, because the plan spreads out. It has rooms designed for use a few times a year.
It usually has a service side sized for people who no longer work there, and mechanical systems retrofitted into voids never meant to carry them.
Any reuse has to solve four problems at once. How do people get in and move around? How does the building meet current code? How is it heated and ventilated? What happens to the rooms nobody needs? Most conversions can be read backwards from those four answers.
The four outcomes
Conversion to several dwellings. The most common fate. The plan is cut along whatever lines are already there: a wing becomes a unit, a floor becomes a unit, the service range becomes a unit.
The tells are external. New doors appear at ground level in odd places. Meter boxes and service runs appear on the elevation. A second stair is added, usually in a rear extension, because separate dwellings need separate escape. Windows appear in blank walls where new rooms were formed.
Institutional occupation. Schools, clinics, offices, local government. The principal rooms survive best here, because an institution wants a handsome room for its public face. Everything else suffers.
Corridors get fire doors, ceilings get suspended, bedrooms become cellular offices, and a lift and accessible entrance get inserted somewhere. Accessibility work is one of the most legible layers on a converted building, and the requirements behind it are published in the ADA accessibility standards.
Subdivision of the grounds. Often more consequential than anything done to the building. The house was designed with an approach, a setting and a service yard. Sell the paddock and the drive changes. Sell the kitchen garden and the service court becomes parking. A house that reads oddly on its plot is usually one whose plot was cut down around it.
Loss. Demolition, or fire followed by demolition. What is left is a gate lodge, a wall, a line of trees, an orchard gone feral, and street names. Reading a former setting from those remnants is a genuine research skill.

Conversion done well
The conversions that age best share a few habits, and preservation guidance has argued for them for decades. Keep the principal spaces legible. Put new work where the building was already least significant. Make it read as new rather than as invented history. Do not remove the evidence of earlier campaigns.

The conversions that age badly usually failed at the plan stage rather than the detail stage. A unit with no daylight in its main room, a corridor formed by cutting a good room in half, a stair inserted through a decorated ceiling: those decisions cannot be undone later with better finishes.

Common questions
Is conversion better than demolition for a historic building?
Usually, because a building in use is maintained and an empty one is not. But a conversion that strips out the significant fabric leaves a shell that no longer carries the history. The question is always which conversion, not whether.
Why do so many converted large houses have an awkward rear extension?
Because escape routes, lifts and services all have to go somewhere, and the rear is where the least valued fabric is. It is the standard answer, and a competent one, even when the result is ugly.
Can I tell how many dwellings a converted house holds from outside?
Sometimes, from door and meter counts, but not reliably. A single household may hold the whole building, and a service arrangement may be historic. This site does not publish occupancy or location information about private homes in any case.
What happened to the service wings?
Demolished, converted to garaging, or turned into the part of the house people actually live in. The kitchen moving from the service side into the middle of the plan is the single biggest change in how these buildings are used.
